About
We get it. HVAC systems can be really complicated. It sounds easy, but as with most home renovations, the details can be really stressful. We try to break it down to make it easy for you.
This is the guide for Seattle homeowners to understand their heat pump options. We’ve also done the calling around for you — there’s a list of selected contractors providing heat pump install services.
If you have any questions, please reach out to hello@carbonfree.house for free advice! We promise — no spam or unwanted phone calls! We are looking to help homeowners electrify their homes with free, impartial information and advice.
HOW IT WORKS
We know that making your homes energy efficient can make a real impact to the environment but can be such a complex and confusing process. We help homeowners in the Greater Seattle Area electrify their homes, and reduce their energy use.
Step 1.
Collect information & understand your home
First, we look to understand what your home is like, and what improvements you’re looking to make.
We’ll ask for information on your existing energy bills (last 12 months for gas & electricity), current heating/cooling system (do you have a gas furnace? how old is it?), and home information (when was it built, is it a townhouse, anything we should know about).
Let us know if there are specific improvements you’re looking to make (solar? ductless heat pumps? induction stove?) and if you have a budget you’re working around.
Next, we can conduct a thermal heat analysis of your home to see where you're losing the most heat. We use an IR/thermal camera which lights up according to temperature, and can show where you might need additional weatherstripping, insulation, or air sealing. We can also conduct a blower door test to determine your ACH (air changes per hour) to see how leaky your house is.
Step 2.
Find contractors, get quotes, understand your options
Once we know more about your house, we will help you to find local contractors and services for your home retrofit.
Depending on the upgrades you’re looking to make, you may need to work with HVAC contractors, electricians, plumbers, or energy and insulation specialists. We’ll reach out to contractors on your behalf, share information about your project, and obtain quotes and recommendations. Save your time waiting for calls and searching for contractors!
Once we have a shortlist of contractors, we’ll compile all the information and summarize your options. There’s no obligation to commit to the project, or to select any particular contractor — it’s all your choice!
Some contractors may want to visit your home to provide a quote — if so, we’ll let you know and you can decide if/when you’d like them to visit.
Step 3.
Find financial resources to reduce costs.
Once you have quotes in hand, and made your decision, you’re ready to move forward!
We can provide you with tools to help understand your project’s Return on Investment (RoI) and long-term costs/savings.
There are often many utility grant rebate programs, or federal tax credits, that are not well publicized — we’ll make sure you know about these and are ready to apply for them. They can help to significantly lower the cost of your home upgrade.
In the long-term, we’re looking to provide carbon credits for homeowners making efficiency improvements and electrification upgrades. This can help to further reduce your upfront costs as you help to reduce your carbon emissions.
For 2022, we’re offering this service at no cost to homeowners in the Greater Seattle Area!
We’re just getting started and would love to work with you.
